Volokhonsky does the original literal translation, and Pevear polishes it. They won the PEN/Book of the Month Club Prize for their translations of The Brothers Karamazov and Anna Karenina. I don't really understand why this is so different from their previous translations, as Pevear and Volokhonsky's Anna Karenina is wonderful, and doesn't have these problems at all.
